Almost ready to go!
Well, considering I have been planning this trip for a couple of months, I felt very disorganized as I packed. My suitcase is fuller (and bigger) that I wanted, but that’s (mostly) because of stuff that I’m taking to my friends in Norway. Or that’s what I’m telling myself.
I drive to Raleigh tomorrow and depart at 8:30 PM. It’s a direct flight to Keflavík, arriving around 6:30 AM. (There’s a 4 hour time difference.) Fingers crossed that I can sleep on the plane! I’ll pick up my camper van at 8 AM and be on my way! I’ll do some grocery shopping and then head out of Reykjavík. I’m heading first to to Golden Circle and plan to camp the first night in the Þingvellir National Park. (It’s also spelled Thingvellir.) You can’t free camp in Iceland, but have to stay in one of the many campgrounds.
The only thing I’ve got booked ahead of time is snorkling on Tuesday morning at Silfra, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are moving apart at a couple of cm a year. It will be in a dry suit, as the water temperature is 36–39˚F.
After that, my plan is to head along the southern coast, but that depends on weather. Right now, the forecast is for temperatures in the 50s and overcast every day next week, but everything I’ve read says that you’ve got to be ready for conditions to change rapidly. I hope to post something here every day or two—we’ll see how well I do!
