Oops, I’m behind!

I've been keeping up all month, but blew it this weekend! The past three days have been fun, with lots of waterfalls. This may be picture-heavy and word-light.
After a wet night at the campground near Akureyri, I had brunch in town, then headed around one of the northern peninsulas (Tjörnes). I stopped for a bit in Húsavík, which is a whale-watching mecca. I thought about going out whale watching, but decided that wasn't on the list for this trip. My target was the Dettifoss waterfall, the second most powerful waterfall in Europe. The geography in that area was totally different from anything I'd seen in Iceland. If anything, it reminded me of parts of Wyoming, with the colors and the canyons.
It was about a kilometer from the car park to Dettifoss, on a rocky trail. And it was definitely worth the hike. And, a half a kilometer upstream was Selfoss, another waterfall. Here's a still shot looking down below the falls, followed by some videos. The sound of Dettifoss was indescribable.
I found myself in the same position I had been in on my first week here. I could turn around and go back to Reykjavik, or I could just keep going and finish the Ring Road the other direction. Of course, I decided to keep going. I aimed for making to south of the East Fjords to camp, and ended at the same campground in the hills above Djúpivogur where I stayed before. The drive was not that long—probably 2.5 hours—but the weather was rain and fog. I took the shortest route, which included an unpaved stretch, but I kept coming across amazing waterfalls around every corner. So the drive wasn't bad.
One of the nice parts of this campground is that it's off the coast and sheltered from the wind. Plus, when you wake up in the morning and the day is clear, the view is amazing! And, as always, there are sheep.
